Ramon Grech at the start of the closing ITT event
This year’s Tour ta’ Malta included four cycling events on four separate days. The Club participation was limited to two categories, Open and Masters, where Ramon Grech raced in the former and Joe Mallia in the Masters.
The launching ITT event proved that the level of foreign cyclists was quite high. This was further confirmed in the second event which was a road race on San Martin circuit.
The third event was switched from Gozo due to road works and transferred to St Paul’s Bypass. Foreign cyclists again dominated this event.
The closing race was an ITT on Zebbug Bypass where the times clocked by foreigners proved higher than that of the locals. Ramon Grech managed a good performance on the closing day clocking 18 minutes 44 seconds and finishing 16th overall and 6th among the locals.
This year’s edition included two professional teams, Christina Watches Onfone and Team OneCo Masterhus which competed in the Elite Pro category. Cycling enthusiasts enjoyed the presence of renowned cyclists Michael Rasmussen and Stefan Schumacher during the four days of the Tour.
